Ergonomics includes all the website features that allow a visitor to easily access the information he is looking for.
Main criteria for optimal ergonomics:
- Simplicity. Good ergonomics should be simple, as they have to adapt to visitors from a broad range of different profiles. Simple ergonomics are characterised by user-friendly graphic elements and navigation system.
- Take into account the diversity of the web users: age, computer equipment, habits and level of Internet knowledge. We will prefer a clear website, not overloaded and well structured.
- Hierarchical organization of the different pieces of information published on the website will provide the visitor with better readability and will strengthen the company’s image.
- Formats, fonts choice and size, colours, references and background have to follow the rules of visual comfort.
- Web users don’t have patience. If downloading a page takes too much time, they will leave the website. As the download time depends on the user’s equipment and Internet connection speed, the web site creator should take into account the weight of the pages and the volume of visitors that the server can support at the same time.
Ergonomics optimization implies that of the navigation, i-e. all the elements that allow web users to direct themselves on a web site. Efficient navigation allows the user to know at any time:
- Where he is
- Where he’s been
- Where he can go
Website navigation optimization obeys several criteria:
- Information accessibility in a minimum of clicks. Experience shows that 3 is the limit.
- Graphic charter homogeneity, as well as the presence of a site map, will contribute to a better memorisation of the website.
- Page URL’s visualization to know where you are.
- Mentioning of information and sources.
The homepage will be a major design focus. It represents a key element as it is the first visual contact of the visitor. It will determine if the visitors pursue the navigation of the web site or not.
